EMPATHY
Empathy is the emotion that allows children to understand how other people feel. This virtue helps children become more sensitive to the needs and feelings of others, be more likely to help those who are hurt or troubled and treat others more compassionately. This moral emotion is what urges children to do what is right as opposed to following negative outside influences.
Teaching Children Empathy
Empathy is one of the greatest gifts we can give our students because it helps them see the good in those around them. If we work hard to raise empathetic students, they'll develop a sense of inner strength that will protect them against outside influences pulling them away from making the proper choices.

RESPECT
Respect encourages children to treat others with consideration. This virtue teaches children to treat others the way they would like to be treated. When children make respect a part of their daily living, they will be more likely to care about the rights and feelings of others; as a result, they will show greater respect to themselves, too.RESPECT in the words of kids….
Respect means that you value or admire something or someone by treating them in a considerate, courteous, and polite manner. How you treat people can let them know you think they are special. Your actions can also show you don’t value someone. It is all in how you act. Acting respectfully is one way to make our world a better place.
Examples of Respect
· Treat others the way you want to be treated
· Be courteous and polite
· Listening to what other people have to say
· Making other people feel good
· Picking up after yourself
· Accept people’s differences

FAIRNESS
I find myself thinking back to one of the most influential books that I have ever read, that is of Cooper`s ``Redefining Fair``. In his book he makes a really interesting and applicable analogy to what fairness should be.
In his book Cooper compares the traditional models of schooling, my previous notion of what fairness means, to a stage in the Tour de France where, ``riders compete against each other, against the clock, over the exact same distance, taking the exact same route. There is only one place on the podium at the end of each stage`` whereas fairness, and also my evolved definition of fairness, should reassemble a guided bicycle tour where ``the guide has the route for the day`s ride and starts out by leading the way. But the riders don’t necessarily stay together, so throughout the ride, the guide doubles back to check on all the riders. She ensures that no one is riding alone, that everyone is cycling at his or her own comfort level, and that no one gets lost or overwhelmed by the terrain…some have taken a different route; some have taken longer than others to arrive at their destination; but all riders have participated in a ride that is appropriate to their skill and fitness level`` (Cooper, 2011, p.22). It is interesting to me to see the evolution of my understanding of fairness as I think back to wanting to be treated like everyone else but asking myself now; how fair is that to me if I really did get treated as everyone else and would I achieve my full potential? I completely agree with Damian Cooper’s approach to the concept of fairness as he had stated in a 2013 presentation, “Fairness is not about sameness but rather of giving equitable opportunities to the needs of differing students”. In his book Cooper speaks further on this very concept of fairness in which I truly respect; ``Fairness must be redefined in terms of equity of opportunity…not all students learning the same things, in the same way, in the same amount of time. Some students will require more time than others; some will need more than one attempt to be successful`` (Cooper, 2011, p. 30).
